From the public square we can walk down to the lake past the important Romanesque church of Saint George and take the beautiful romantic path along the lake to the departure point for the ferries to Menaggio, Cadenabbia and Bellagio.

Above Varenna is Perledo where it is possible visit to the Longobard Castle of Vezio, which is still accessible via its working drawbridge.

Arriving in Bellano we find the former cotton mill Cantoni, a nineteenth-century factory, and in the public square in the historic center of the town are the churches of Saint Marta and Saints Nazaro and Celso. Over Bellano rises the Sanctuary of the Madonna of Lezzeno, a destination of religious pilgrimage. Not far from the town center the Orrido of Bellano, a gorge carved through the rock by the waters of the torrent Pioverna that comes down from the Valsassina, is a famous attraction.

We then abandon the lakeside road and retracing our steps for approximately 1 km. Turn to climb towards Taceno, the road becomes narrower and begins to twist and turn with many tight hairpin bends and points overlooking the lake. The road then follows the river into the valley of Valsassina.

Once in the valley it is interesting to make a side trip to Premana, famous locality for the production of knives, and to visit the interesting ethnographic museum or to continue in the evocative Valsassina in the direction of Introbbio.

On reaching the peak of the road at Ballabio one can take the side road up to the Plains of Resinelli. It is a mountain road with many tight hairpin curves. This locality is situated to the feet of the Grignetta and has been the point of arrival of motorcycle hill climb contests and is the point of departure for alpine and rock climbing excursions.

We then return along the same road to Ballabio and then continue along the S.P.62 to arrive at Rancio, Lecco, and from here we re-enter the S.S.36 to Mandello del Lario
