MOTO GUZZI - THE HISTORY, THE LEGEND: A PASSION.
Duilio Agostini was born in Mandello del Lario in 1926. His family
owned the Hotel Giardinetto, overlooking Lake Como, where famous Guzzi
racers such as Omobono, Tenni, Stanley Woods, Bandini, Moretti, Prini
and many others regularly met or stayed, together with the management
of Moto Guzzi itself.
"The passion begins to grow..."
After
studying at Guzzi's Mechanical Design Faculty Duilio was initially
employed in the Customer Service Department at the factory, moving on
in 1947 to become a test rider responsible directly to Carlo Guzzi and
had the opportunity to work alongside Engineer Carcano (creator of the
V-Twin and the legendary eight-cylinder engine).
In
1950 he competed in his first race aboard a Condor 500 lent to him by
friends and prepared himself, and the first victories soon arrived.
In
1953, aboard a Dondolino, he won the outright victory in the famous
Milano-Taranto race and became Italian Champion.
In 1954
he was appointed works rider on a 350 and the 250 Bialbero, and took
part in international races alongside Anderson, Kavanagh and
Lorenzetti, winning several races and finishing on the podium on other
occasions, winning the Italian 250cc Championship.
In 1955 he
met an Australian lady at the Isle of Man T.T. races (where he finished
in 8th position) whom he married in 1956. A year later, in 1957, their
first daughter - Alis - was born.
In
1956 Duilio opened a Moto Guzzi workshop which later became an official
dealer. At the end of 1957 Duilio retired from racing.
In the '70, Duilio created a stable of pilots and mechanics
and successfully participated in 24 hour endurance races across Europe
using a tuned V7 Sport. Drawing on this experience Duilio "created" and
put into production a range of tuning parts for Moto Guzzis.
In 1981
the daughters of Duilio, Alis and Lindy, began to work in the
dealership. Lindy left in 1993, but to the present day Alis continues
to run the business, supported by her team of enthusiastic staff.
